Sample Answer

Spiritual Needs Assessment

A spiritual needs assessment could play a significant role in helping the physician in the case study avoid making any assumptions and clearly understanding Mike’s spiritual beliefs and practices. For instance, through the spiritual needs assessment, the physician would note that Mike and his family are staunch believers with a significant inclination to evangelical doctrine. Understanding Mike’s spiritual beliefs and practices would therefore help the physician to suggest adequate interventions that bring a balance between respecting Mike’s faith and preserving his son’s health (Evans, 2019). After conducting a thorough spiritual needs assessment on Mike, the physician will recommend a holistic approach to treat James. This would include a combination of both spiritual practices and medical interventions. Therefore, such an approach would be acceptable to Mike and his family while also playing a significant role in preserving the health of his son James.

A spiritual needs assessment would also help build rapport and trust between Mike and the physician (Timmins & Caldeira, 2017). Mike would therefore realize that the physician is committed to respecting his spiritual practices and beliefs in the treatment process of his son James. Conducting the spiritual needs assessment would help Mike be more welcoming to the physician and be more responsive to advice on the best treatment approach for his son James.
