BMOL40180 Biological Imaging
Academic Year 2021/2022
“An image is worth a thousand words” but Adobe Photoshop can help you make up an image! Imaging is an essential tool commonly used in the Life Sciences but depending on the modalities used and the expertise of the users, as well as the image processing protocols, many issues can arise. In this module, you will be introduced to the large spectra of imaging methods from photography and photogrammetry to advanced methodologies such as Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy and Super Resolution. We will cover electron microscopy, X-ray, NMR , light, holographic, AFM and beyond. The lectures will be complemented by practical sessions.
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:
1. Critically discuss biological imaging methods
2. Understand the imaging process and resulting images obtained;
3. Assess the physics and biology of imaging systems;
4. Understand the basics of image processing
Indicative Module Content:
physical processes of imaging (conversion, format, offsets, default settings)
scale, resolution, energy usage
