The family structure is similar to a system, with its own set of characteristics. When relatives’ relationships suffer stress and issues in the structure, the participant’s problems are seen in the context of the broader family dynamic, according to the structural approach. Every person in a relationship uses internal and external outputs to control the reactions of others. Several forms of family art therapy approaches may be used to overcome issues between the dynamics of a family system. Because it examines interaction patterns and the structures of power amongst members of the family, the structural family therapy model has been beneficial with families seeking therapy. There are many distinct theories of family therapy, including structural, comprehensive, Bowenian, and strategic. All of these family therapy models might benefit from art therapy treatments. Painting exercises in which the art creating process is watched, as well as viewing and discussing the completed artwork, may be used as a valuable tool for assessing the structure of a family. The structural therapy approach aims to enhance and adapt the family system (Kakabarayi, Amiri & AfshariNia, 2019). Parents are in charge, and offspring are given reasonable limits. Applying it to family art therapy treatments may be extremely beneficial for a nurse.

Salvador Minuchin, an Argentinian born to Russian Jewish immigrants, is credited with founding structural family art therapy. The “interdependency of the whole” is the emphasis of structural family therapy approaches. The structural therapist’s therapeutic attitude is to come back into the fold in order to watch, learn, and improve their chances of assisting in the strengthening of family connections (Kakabarayi, Amiri & AfshariNia, 2019). Organization, substructure, borders, entanglement, detachment, power, realignment, and coalition are some of the key topics addressed in this paradigm. The structure is one of the most essential concepts in this theory because every family, based on that information, has a structure. In this context, structure refers to how a family arranges itself.

Relating the Theory to Romana Mercer

This theory relates to the Romana Mercer nursing theory. Romana Mercer idea discusses the importance of the mother-children relationship in nursing. According to Romana, the bond between a mother and her kid is highly essential. The base for how the mother and child grows and evolve together, as well as how the kid grows separately, is the cornerstone of this connection (Meighan, 2018). Therefore, many nurses working in the maternal field need to foster this relationship. The Romana theory provides them with the skills and tools that they can use to strengthen the mother-child bond. Both the Romana Mercer nursing theory and the Minuchin structural family theory focus on the family and its interrelationships. Just like in the Munichin structural family theory, Romana Mercer also focuses on the parenting role in therapy (Meighan, 2018). Romana Mercer’s approach provides nurses with skills and tools that they can use to help the mother during and after birth to develop a strong family identity (Meighan, 2018). These efforts help build and establish the structural family therapy discussed by Munichin in his theory. Therefore, the Romana Mercer ideas act as the building blocks of the Munichin structural family therapy model. In addition, the Munichin structural family model emphasis the structure of the family, which includes the parents overseeing the children (Kakabarayi, Amiri & AfshariNia, 2019). However, the Munichin model also emphasis on the importance of working or living with the family in order to know, learn and understand them better so as to provide the best interventions. On the other hand, the Romana Mercer model provides the nurses with such skills and tools that they can use and apply when interacting with the family. Therefore, Romana Mercer’s theory comprehends the Munichin approach by providing the basis for establishing structural family therapy.
