APN Scope of Practice
Generally, the scope of practice describes the services that a qualified healthcare professional will be permitted to undertake and deemed competent to perform in line with their professional license (Kazer et al., 2018). The scope of practice varies across different states in the US. On the other hand, core competencies highlight what every nurse practitioner is required to know after they graduate from nursing school. Leadership is one of the core competencies of advanced practice nurses. The purpose of this paper is to consider the scope of practice of APNs in Connecticut and consider the core competencies and leadership skills that can contribute to successful practice in the state.
Advanced Practice Nurse Scope of Practice
In Connecticut, an APN is required to earn a master’s degree in nursing or in a related field that might be considered certification qualifying. The APN is also required to go through at least 30 hours of education in pharmacology. The APN is also required to pursue national certification, with the state of Connecticut approving certification issued by different organizations, including the AANP, ANCC, among others (CT.GOV, 2020). An APN is also required to have a license as a registered nurse. Considering that Connecticut is not a signatory to the nurse licensure compact, all APNs who want to practice in Connecticut are required to obtain the Connecticut registered nurse licensure irrespective of their original state of residence. The state of Connecticut also allows recently graduated registered nurses who qualify for advanced practice programs and who have applied for certification examination to practice under supervision for the period pending examination with a maximum time frame of 120 Days (CT.GOV, 2020).
The license requirements for the APN in the state of Connecticut are being a holder of a current Connecticut RN license and holding current certification as a NP, CNS, or nurse anesthetist. To be eligible as an APN in Connecticut, an individual must also successfully complete at least 30 hours of education in pharmacology. One also needs to possess a graduate degree in nursing or related fields that are recognized for certification as a nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, or nurse practitioner. A completed application and a $200 fee is required to apply for the APN license in the Connecticut department of public health (CT.GOV, 2020).
Advanced nurse practitioners need to hold a current Connecticut RN license which includes completing the NCLEX-RN. This license costs $180.APNs are also required to hold and maintain certification from national organizations for different advanced practice nursing disciplines. The state of Connecticut also requires nurses to complete at least 30 hours of education in pharmacology for advanced practice nursing. The Department of public health in Connecticut is responsible for ensuring that all regulations related to advance practice nursing are followed in Connecticut (CT.GOV, 2020).
The state of Connecticut allows full practice authority for advanced practice nurses who have maintained their APRN license for a period of not less than three years in the state and who have actively engaged in the performance of APN activities in collaboration with Connecticut license positions for the three-year period. APNs who have worked under collaboration with Connecticut licensed physicians for more than three years or 2,000 hours are able to practice on their own without any collaborative agreement (CT.GOV, 2020).
However, for the first three years of obtaining a license in Connecticut, APNs are required to collaborate with physicians that are licensed in the state. The collaborative agreements highlight the level of referral and consultation and the different practice roles that APNs can perform (Kazer et al., 2018). The collaborative agreements between advanced practice nurses and Physicians also include the schedule and schedule 3 controlled substances that advanced practice nurses can prescribe and the diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests, corrective measures, and the duties that APNs may dispense, administer or prescribe (Kazer et al., 2018).
In Connecticut, advanced practice nurses are allowed to prescribe both schedule III and schedule III controlled substances when practicing under collaborative agreements and when they receive full practice authority after three years of practicing under collaborative agreements. APNs can therefore administer, dispense and prescribe medication without requiring any extra license in Connecticut. APNs obtain their prescriptive authority through their APN licensure that requires the successful completion of more than 30 hours of education in pharmacology (Kazer et al., 2018).
Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies
Competency Areas That I’m Personally Strong
The two competency areas that I believe I’m personally strong in include leadership and ethics. By possessing the leadership competency, I’m able to embrace leadership opportunities in healthcare settings to facilitate change. As a leader, I’m also able to effectively collaborate with different parties in healthcare environments in different efforts to improve healthcare. I also have excellent written and oral communication skills. I also possess ethical competency in that I am able to analyze the ethical impact of all my decisions in the practice setting while also relying on ethical decision-making to resolve different issues I come across during my practice. I am also aware of the ethical complexity associated with health care delivery to populations and individuals (Chan et al., 2020).
Competency Areas Where There is Room for Growth
The two competency areas that I need to improve on include scientific foundations and technology and information literacy. By working to enhance my scientific foundations competency, I will therefore be able to think more critically then utilize data to improve my practice. On the other hand, by improving my technology and information literacy competency, I will gain the knowledge of utilizing appropriate technology to manage information and improve patient care (Chan et al., 2020).
Scholarly Activities to Help Achieve NP Competencies
The scholarly activities that can help me in achieving nurse practitioner competencies, including scientific foundations and technology and information literacy, include persistently participating in research to come up with evidence-based practice. Attending workshops and conferences related to the use of technology in healthcare can also help me boost my technology and information literacy competency.
Three Leadership Skills Required to Lead in Complex Systems
The three essential leadership skills that a NPs require include communication, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence. Nurse practitioner leaders need to be skilled in spoken and written communication and active listening (Heinen et al., 2019). Nurse leaders also need to resolve conflicts amicably to maintain positive team morale. Nurse leaders also need to be emotionally intelligent, which allows them to have an awareness of interpersonal interactions, be empathetic and understand how to communicate in different situations and with different individuals (Heinen et al., 2019).
Two Strategies to Help Develop NP Leadership Skills
The two strategies that can help me develop NP leadership skills would include enrolling in leadership skills courses such as emotional intelligence conflict resolution and communication courses. Having a mentor can also play a significant role in helping an NP to develop leadership skills (Heinen et al., 2019).
In summary, in Connecticut, an advanced practice nurse is required to earn a master’s degree in nursing or in a related field go through At least 30 hours of education in pharmacology. And pursue national certification to obtain a license. After licensing, an APN is required to work under a collaborative agreement with a physician in Connecticut for at least three years before they obtain full practice authority. As an APN, my main competency areas include leadership and ethics, while I need to improve on scientific foundations and technology, and information literacy. As an APN, I believe that the three essential leadership skills at NP required to lead within complex systems include conflict resolution communication and emotional intelligence.
