Wit and John Donne Poetry
The movie Wit is not a survival story but a journey of life and death. The movie tries to give the idea of staying strong in the dying days, through sickness, being strong during struggles, and surviving in difficult times. The movie constructs the need for patients to have self-control during disease treatment, understanding people’s weaknesses, self-exposure, and perhaps most challenging of all. In the film Wit, John Donne’s poetry is essential because it shows how Vivian used her college poetry class to study his work and connect to her life (John, 2019). After Vivian Bearing was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer, she is believed to have thought highly of John Donne to use his metaphysical poet style to connect to his poetry (John, 2019). Vivian connected to John Donne’s poetry differently in this situation because it gave her some understanding of the true meaning of life and death and the value or quality of the two.
Vivian managed to try and understand the real meaning of her life as she was approaching the imminent death, which was open to the nurses and her own eyes. The film shows how the structure of the medical care system is faced with challenges that make the medical providers fail. The film shows how some medical teams fail to practice their nursing or caring profession standards ethically (Ozcakir & Bilgel, 2014). Wit’s film becomes extremely difficult to watch from a healthcare perspective because it embarrasses a caregiver who sees persons in their profession failing in duty. The nurses and other caregivers feel inexcusable for the lack of human caring shown by caregivers who lacked respect, dignity, and compassion as they offered services to Vivian. The mistakes made by Dr. Kelekian and Dr. Posner teach the nurses and future nurse practitioners to be ethical in their roles as caregivers.
