Examples of Psychosocial Factors Affecting Healthcare Professionals and Effects on Patient Education

            Examples of psychosocial factors that may affect a health care professional include organizational culture, workload, work-related stress, organizational leadership, employee burnout, and cultural competence. Such factors can promote or hinder patient education. According to Asante et al. (2019), psychosocial factors at work in health care facilities is an indirect predictor of quality of care. The factors affect the ability of the professional to deliver patient education in terms of time, competencies, and appropriate resources.

Examples of Psychosocial Factors that Affect the Patient and Effects on Patient Education

            Psychosocial factors that may influence the patient include past experiences, beliefs about illness, support system, culture, perceptions, and social status. The factors affect patient education in two ways. One way is the ability to understand the components taught. Factors such as support system, social status, and culture affect the implementation of the knowledge gained.

Personality Styles and Approaches that can be Used to Help the Patient

            Personality styles refer to a person’s relatively consistent behavior and preferences across contexts. A personality is defined as a difference in characteristic patterns of an individual in terms of thinking, behaving, or feeling (El Othman et al., 2020). One approach is limit-setting, especially for individuals that are more demanding. A method approach would be effective to help patients who are focused on details. Open communication can be used as an approach for a person’s reassurance. To choose a proper approach, the self-perception of the patient must be understood. It may be influenced by their religion, culture, gender, or other factors. Understanding the influencing factor enables a professional to adopt an appropriate approach.

Steps in Adjustment to Illness and Coping Methods at each Step

            The steps that a patient experiences before adjusting to an illness include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The patient copes with denial by seeking other medical opinions. Patients cope with the anger a\stage by channeling it to those around them. The bargaining stage is managed by hoping for a better situation if one makes changes. Patients cope with depression through social support. Acceptance involves giving up, realizing one has to face the illness.

Health Care Professional’s Role in Teaching the Patient at Different Life Stages

            The role of healthcare professionals in teaching the patients at different life stages includes relaying information to facilitate or promote disease prevention or disease management. A healthcare professional teaches patients how to prevent other health conditions of complications through proper management of their conditions. The professional creates awareness, responds to concerns, and provides direction.

The Role of the Family in Patient Education

            Family plays a critical role in the patient’s life by providing care and a support system. According to Jazieh, Volker, and Taher (2018), the family contributes towards decision making, improving safety and quality of care, assists in home care, and assists the health care team in providing care such as administering medication. Including the family in patient education equips them with knowledge on how to take care of the patient and offer support to the patient.

 

How the Family Influence the Compliance of the Patient and Measures That the Health Care Professional Can Use in Communication with the Family

            The family can influence the compliance of the patient by the impact the patient through family values, lifestyle, and beliefs. A family can motivate the patient to comply with care treatment or limit them from adopting necessary changes. Health care professionals can adopt individualized care based on the family’s lifestyle. Positive impact can be achieved by collaborating with the most influential family member as the roles of family members varies significantly across cultures (Jazieh, Volker, & Taher, 2018).
